Playroom Upgrade

4/20/2018

It's always exciting to see the outcome of a project when our client has a vision for a space...especially one that makes great use of the room's features. In this playroom, our client needed storage so we started with a bench with three soft-closing flip-top lids. To maximize storage along the wall, we added built-in bookcases between the windows. Making creative use of the vertical space allows our client to style the shelves and evolve them as the needs of their family change.  As a bonus, the built-in bookcases created multiple reading nooks that work beautifully in front of their wall of windows...feeling playroom envy right about now!

A Room with a View

What better way to enjoy this room and view than with a cozy banquette to stretch out? Our Indian Land clients had a dining nook with a view of their lovely wooded lot. Together, we designed a corner banquette with soft-closing, flip-top lids to create lots of seating with LOADS of storage. Because we all know, the kitchen is the heart of the home!

Desk Nook Update

2/16/2018

It's alway fun reinventing a space with client. This week, my Tega Cay client wanted to repurpose an original desk nook that had a countertop and a wire shelf to something more functional. We took out the existing desktop and turned the space into both a mudroom/drop-zone AND a laundry hanging area. Complete with top cubbies for storage, soft-close benches, hooks for jackets AND a hanging bar, this old desk area has not one new life, but two!

Blank Slate in Weddington

1/22/2018

This week's project was in a new home in Weddington. The client's recently moved in and needed their entryway off the garage outfitted with a drop-zone. They chose an open-bottom base that would hold boots or baskets and a duplex top, one divided and one open with crown to finish it off. On the walls, they chose a combination of bead board with a board and batten trim overlay and 5 hooks, enough for the couple, their two kids and guests.

Pocket Office to Bar Conversion

9/14/2017

Many builders today create a nook in the main living area for what they call a “pocket office.” These clients had something a bit more fun in mind for the space. They started by shiplapping the walls themselves and had me in to build out and install the bar cabinetry and fridge, as well as the butcher block top from Ikea. They then added the floating shelves and decorated the bar area and it looks amazing!!

A Mudroom Without a "Room"

5/12/2017

Not everyone has a dedicated space in their home for a mudroom, but that doesn't mean you can't create one to help keep things organized.
This week, our client decided to use the wall in her garage to create a beautiful and functional drop-zone for her family. She has since added a store bought bench in front of the hook wall for a combination that makes a  great solution.

Dining Room Refresh

5/1/2017

Our Tega Cay client was looking to give her dining room a whole new look. First, we pulled her white chair rail and picture framing off the walls. Then, we replaced it with ledge height board & batten around the entire room. Painted white, the board and batten creates a beautiful backdrop for this elegant dining room table and the dark brown walls add lots of drama.

A Pantry to Love

2/13/2017

Our Massey client had the pantry so many of us new home buyers start off with...builder-grade white wire pantry shelves that don't maximize the space or hold everything we need. After determining how she wanted to use the space, our client sketched out her dream pantry that provided her a workspace counter AND maximized the space for the storage she needed. Complete with under-cabinet lighting, it truly is a pantry to love.

Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cafe

This week's project was for my most demanding client, my wife - another one on her winter "honey-do" list. We had this large blank wall between our kitchen cabinets and our kitchen eating area.  So, she came up with this coffee bar idea to serve a few purposes...1) to display her collection of Starbucks You Are Here mugs, 2) to fill that large blank wall in the kitchen and 3) as a place to house extra seating for around our island when we entertain - 3 stools is never enough! She wanted something that wouldn't take the entire holiday break to execute and would carry over the natural wood elements we have elsewhere in the house. Thankfully, she loves it...however, every hook on the wall is now full so we need a larger mug holder!

Bringing Outdoor Fun Inside

During the time of year when business slows down before the holidays, my wife comes up with her long honey-do list for our house. This week's project was motivated by two main things:
  1. she was tired of constantly cleaning up toys strewn all over the playroom floor, and
  2. she wanted someplace for the kids to be physical - rain or shine - too cold or too warm outside.
She designed this play space and we built it out together...a bench seat beneath the windows that serves more as a launch pad than a seat! Two swings - one for each girl. A trapeze on clips that can come on and off and a set of monkey bars that fit perfectly in the framed opening in this space. We decorated the walls with stained shiplap to protect the sheetrock and added two coordinating cornices over the windows. It is - no doubt - the most used room in our house...all year long!
